Pause before resolving a Steam Cloud conflict

Compare the save versions instead of clicking through automatically.

A Steam Cloud conflict means Steam has detected a difference between relevant local files and cloud files. Steam’s documentation explains that games can use Cloud for save data, settings and other information. A conflict prompt therefore deserves attention: choosing a version without checking can put the progress you intended to keep at risk.

Start by recalling where you last played successfully. Compare the displayed timestamps and any other information in the prompt with that session. Do not assume “cloud” automatically means newer or “local” automatically means safer. If you are uncertain, stop and consult the game’s documentation or support guidance before making an irreversible choice.

Our suggested personal record is simple: device, last completed session and whether the game closed normally. This is particularly useful when moving between a desktop and a handheld or laptop. Give the client a chance to complete synchronisation before switching devices, and pay attention to reported errors.

If you can safely locate the game’s save folder using developer instructions, keeping a separate backup before resolving a conflict can protect a copy for investigation. File locations and recovery options vary by game, so this guide does not offer a universal folder path. Cloud synchronisation and an independent backup serve different purposes. Treat the official conflict message as a decision about your data, not as a routine notification to dismiss.
